About the Math-Net Page
Today, almost all mathematical
departments or mathematical research institutes have a homepage, i.e., a Web
entry point and a signpost to a Web site (other common terms are "portals" or
"sitemaps"). Web sites of (mathematical) departments consist of collections of
interrelated information of the institution. A clear and intuitive structure of
the homepage is essential for user-friendly navigation and search. A problem
with the current (sometimes beautifully designed) homepages is that many of them
differ significantly with respect to structure and contents.
The Math-Net Page for departments or mathematical research institutes, in the
following context called Math-Net Page, is an attempt to standardize the
presentation of departmental information. The International Mathematical Union
(IMU) asks all
mathematical institutions to offer this simple and intuitively
structured Web entry point as a "secondary homepage" so that the Internet user
looking for specific information can find results quickly.
The Math-Net Page is not intended to replace an existing "primary homepage".
The idea of the Math-Net Page is simple and straightforward. Nevertheless a few conceptual and technical
details have to be considered when creating and installing a Math-Net Page. The Math-Net Page Maker is
a tool to support the creation of Math-Net Pages. Please read the following instructions to get
acquainted with the concepts and techniques.
