The Aim of the Math-Net Page
Typically, a Web site of a department contains address information, an
overview about the institution, preprints, teaching material, library information,
and so on.
The Math-Net Page as a secondary homepage aims to be a standardized
portal for the core information offered by the department. Beyond this,
it provides access to the "global" Math-Net
Services explained below. For all participating mathematical departments,
the Math-Net Page is supposed to have a (nearly) uniform structure, notation,
and design. The intention is to give all these secondary homepages a standardized
look-and-feel so that visitors are familiar with the structure of the page
whereever they access such a homepage. Two examples, the Math-Net Pages
of the Departments of Mathematics of the University of Cologne and of Duke
University, are shown below.
The Math-Net Page is not a substitute for the primary homepage of the
department. As a matter of standardization it should have a prominent link
to this departmental homepage.
The main aims of the Math-Net Page are to provide
-
a friendly entry point to the local information for the human user
-
a standardized entry point supporting in particular special Math-Net search
engines that collect information offered by the mathematical institutions.
This enables comprehensive high quality information services for the global
mathematical community.
